Hello I am Joseph Cruze Bailey, I am 22 years old, from Greenville, South Carolina. Growing up I felt like I never fit in. My aspirations have always been a dark cloud over my head. Considering where I live, a career in the fashion industry seemed impossible. I was always comparing myself to society’s idea of perfection. I'm too short, I'm too muscular, my accent will prevent me from getting certain roles. At one point, I almost gave up completely. Every night before I went to bed, I would pray for an opportunity to prove my passion. I always knew acting and modeling was worth the endeavor. When I finally had the chance to walk in New York Fashion Week, I felt as if my dreams had come true. I was elated to say the least! When I arrived, I was so nervous considering I was the shortest person there. Once again, my thoughts overcame me. I can't do this, I don't fit in. Suddenly, my thoughts came to a halt as I saw the most beautiful girl walk into the room. Eventually, she approached me first and then we ended up spending the whole time together. We both shared our concerns about being the shortest models there but her overwhelming confidence made me feel more comfortable. Now we've been dating ever since.
The Fashion Hero has encouraged me to be confident about being unique. This is more than a TV series, this is history in the making. Not only has this show inspired change in the fashion industry but it also empowers people who do not “fit the mold” to challenge unrealistic standards in the fashion and beauty industry. I am beyond honored to be a part of change for the better.
I wish I had the opportunity to see someone who looked like me on ADs and commercials when I was younger. And now I hope to influence aspiring talents that it's okay to break the mold.
