Who am I?

Nokwethaba Mchunu is a Clothing Design graduate of the Lindiwe Kuzwayo of Fashion. From childhood I have had a passion for fashion expressed through making items of clothing for dolls. As I grew older, I realized that there is a gap in the fashion industry for women like me – plus size women. Retailers seem to think that once you are over a certain size, you don’t care about fashion and want nothing more fashionable than yet another mid-length mock wrap-front jersey dress in an ugly print. My struggles motivated me to boost women’s confidence and joy through fashion. I am a passion driven young woman with a clear vision about her brand. My accomplishments include: i. Secured a contract to supply my garments at Vino’s Exclusive Boutique in my first year. ii. Participated in the Durban Fashion Fair, AwearSA Fashion Show, Africa Fashion Exchange and FFM.

What do I think about the Fashion Hero TV Series?

The show represents the meaning of true beauty in everyone and demonstrates that there is hope. It shows that you have the power to make your dreams come true. I have always believed in beauty diversity and have been bored of ‘normal’ industry standards for a long time. The show examines women’s relationship with their body for the first time, questioning why they feel they should lose weight or why they feel they don’t deserve to enjoy fashion. The Fashion Hero is a ground-breaking new TV concept, where people who have been constantly rejected, or felt they did not fit into the standards of the fashion and beauty industries, have the chance to accomplish what they once thought was impossible: becoming a model, brand ambassador, or become the face of The Fashion Hero global movement. After completing a season of The Fashion Hero, I absolutely loved it, I could feel and understand what the contestants went through, they were all so inspirational. They all had different issues in their life, and you can associate with them as REAL people. The designers were open minded and saw everyone as what they truly were.

Why would I be a great role model for this generation and inspire people as the new face of the Fashion Hero?

As a plus-size fashion designer, an entrepreneur and educated individual, I can motivate the world to go after their dreams and get and education because often these days people believe that you an only do one or the other. I demonstrate a commitment to a desired goal, and I am willing to invest the necessary time and effort to achieve success. Even through a global pandemic I do not give up easily and I persevere when confronted by obstacles by completing short courses online and sketching designs for my new line. I believe that my passion to succeed will inspire youngsters to follow through and reach the goals they set for themselves. I really do love fashion and love being a voice for plus-size women and I want to be known for being stylish and fashionable.
